  11.   The DDN MANAGEMENT BULLETIN is distributed online by the DDN Network
  12.   Information Center under DISA contract as a means of communicating
  13.   official policy, procedures and other information of concern to
  14.   management personnel at DDN facilities.  Back issues may be read
  15.   through the TACNEWS server ("@n" command at the TAC) or may be
  16.   obtained by FTP (or Kermit) from the NIC.DDN.MIL host [192.112.36.5]
  17.   using login="anonymous" and password="guest".  The pathname
  18.   for bulletins is ddn-news/ddn-mgt-bulletin-nn.txt (where "nn" is the
  19.   bulletin number).

  22.                Update on the MILNET Transition to BGP
  23.  
  24. BGP Cutover Less Critical
  25. =========================
  26.  
  27.         DDN MGT Bulletin 130 stated that all DDN clients must convert
  28.         from EGP to BGP protocol by 1 October 1993. This was based on
  29.         the growth in the number of MILNET gateways advertised in
  30.         routing updates. This number was approaching the 510 gateway
  31.         limit imposed by EGP.
  32.  
  33.         With the downsizing and reconfiguration of the MILNET, the
  34.         number of gateways has dropped, and it no longer appears that
  35.         the 510 limit will be reached under the current MILNET
  36.         architecture. As a result, there is no longer a critical need
  37.         to transition from EGP to BGP.
  38.  
  39.         However, BGP remains the recommended external gateway
  40.         protocol and subscribers should maintain the goal of converting
  41.         to BGP:
  42.  
  43.             1) It is a more efficient protocol which reduces network
  44.                traffic.
  45.  
  46.             2) It is more robust, better able to detect and prevent
  47.                routing loops.
  48.  
  49.             3) It will prepare subscribers for upcoming network
  50.                architectures which will likely eliminate EGP.
  51.  
  52.         At this time DISA has not established a mandatory BGP implementation 
  53.         deadline. When a new deadline is established, we will notify all 
  54.         users at the earliest possible date.

  66.         Cisco users should refer to "Notes for Cisco Users", below.

  68.         ROUTER/GATEWAY ADMINISTRATORS FOR NON-CISCO OR NON-GateD ROUTERS
  69.         SHOULD CONTACT THE APPROPRIATE VENDOR(S) TO DETERMINE THE 
  70.         REQUIRED SOFTWARE VERSION TO DO BGP.

  73. Notes for Cisco Users

  76.         The following information is provided by cisco systems:

  78.         The following recommendations will assure interoperability
  79.         between Cisco "customer premise" routers and the MILNET BBN
  80.         T/20 backbone nodes. STAYING WITH 9.0.x SOFTWARE FOR CSC/3
  81.         BASED SYSTEMS WILL HELP AVOID THE MEMORY ISSUES CURRENTLY
  82.         BEING EXPERIENCED ON SOME CSC/3 SYSTEMS running 9.1.x.

  102.         TO CSC/4 68040 W/ 16MB RAM AND THE MOST CURRENT SOFTWARE
  103.         RELEASE IN THE 9.1 TREE (CURRENTLY 9.1.7)

  105.         SOFTWARE UPGRADES MAY REQUIRE MICROCODE UPGRADES FOR ROUTER
  106.         INTERFACE CARDS. Software upgrades and microcode upgrades are
  107.         free of charge to cisco maintenance customers or customers
  108.         under standard warranty (90 days).
  109.  
  110.         CSC/4 CPU card upgrade can be accomplished via ordering:

  113.         (expires 3/31/94)) (SOFTWARE NOT INCLUDED).

  115.         Software upgrades for non-maintenance customers is $495.00

  119.         Microcode upgrades for non-maintenance customers is $500.00
  120.         per interface card.
